Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoxazole are the same active ingredient which has been for at least five years. They work in the same way by preventing the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body.
Sulfamethoxazole can be taken with or without food. The dosage and duration of treatment will depend on which one you are prescribed.
Trimethoprim and Bactrim are often taken together to help prevent the formation of drug-resistant bacteria. This can be a very real concern for many people with bacterial infections.
This should be strictly on your medical advice and you should never take any more tablets or stop taking any tablets without talking to your doctor
Medicine Recommendations/Precautions
Do not take Bactrim if you are allergic to sulfamethoxazole or trimethoprim. Always inform your doctor about your complete medical history before starting Bactrim.
This medication may cause side effects. These effects are usually temporary and will dissipate as your body gets used to the medication. However, be sure to speak to your doctor if they persist or if you need to use your medication continuously.
Dosage Information
The typical starting dose for Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoxazole is 1-2 mg per day. This may be increased to 2-4 mg or decreased to 1-1.5 mg based on effectiveness and tolerance.
The duration of treatment will depend on the dosage and your infection severity.
Possible side effects may include breast tenderness, discharge, swollen breasts, nausea, vomiting, headache, and flushing. Contact your doctor if these side effects persist or become severe.
The most common side effects of Trimethoxazole include breast tenderness, discharge, nausea, vomiting, headache, and itching.
This medication can also cause a very serious side effect called Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS).
If you experience any serious side effects while taking this medication contact your doctor right away.
The risks and benefits of taking Trimethoprim and Bactrim together are not fully understood. However, you should always discuss all your medical history with your doctor, including current treatments, especially hormonal treatments, chemotherapy, radiation, chemotherapy, chemotherapy drugs, and/or antibiotics. Trimethoprim may also interact with certain medications.
You should not take Bactrim while you are taking this medication unless you have a serious medical condition such as a breast cancer or a history of liver disease. Before taking this medication, you should always talk to your doctor about all your complete medical history, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions.
The most common side effects of Trimethoprim include difficulty in speaking, being unable to swallow, and being unable to hear. Contact your doctor if you experience any side effects that bother you, or are worried about them.
You should not stop taking Trimethoprim suddenly, as it may lead to a return of infection. You should not stop taking Trimethoprim without talking to your doctor, as they will need to adjust your treatment plan very slowly to prevent any permanent side effects.
You should not take Bactrim together with alcohol or other medications that can cause harm to an unborn baby. It may interact with Trimethoprim and cause harm to an unborn baby. You should not take Trimethoprim with a strong antacid such as an antacid for at least 24 hours after taking it. You should take this medication with food to avoid any stomach upset.

However, consult a doctor if you experience weakness, confusion, numbness or tingling, and uneven heartbeats. Do not stop taking any medication without consulting your doctor.
Taking captopril with Bactrim DS Tablet may increase the risk of hyperkalemia (high level of potassium in the blood) and kidney problems.Although there is an interaction between Bactrim DS Tablet and captopril, they can be taken together if prescribed by a doctor.
Taking fosphenytoin with Bactrim DS Tablet may increase the risk of side effects.Although there is an interaction between fosphenytoin and Bactrim DS Tablet, they can be taken together if prescribed by a doctor. However, consult a doctor if you experience, weakness, vomiting, blurry vision, or trouble speaking.
Using ropivacaine with Bactrim DS Tablet can cause higher levels of Bactrim DS Tablet in the blood.Although taking Ropivacaine and Bactrim DS Tablet together can evidently cause an interaction, it can be taken if your doctor has suggested it. However, if you experience gray discoloration of the skin, abnormal blood coloration, nausea, headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, shortness of breath, rapid or shallow breathing, a rapid heartbeat, palpitation, anxiety, or confusion contact your doctor immediately. Do not stop using any medications without a doctor's advice.
Co-administration of Bactrim DS Tablet with tetracaine can result in blood disorders.Although there is an interaction between Bactrim DS Tablet and tetracaine, they can be taken together if prescribed by a doctor. However, consult a doctor if you experience nausea, headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, or shortness of breath.
Taking Bactrim DS Tablet with Benazepril can cause high levels of potassium in the blood.Although there is an interaction between benazepril and Bactrim DS Tablet, they can be taken together if prescribed by a doctor.
TrimethoprimAzilsartan medoxomil
Coadministration of Azilsartan medoxomil with Bactrim DS Tablet may increase potassium levels in the blood.Although there is an interaction between azilsartan medoxomil and Bactrim DS Tablet, they can be taken together if prescribed by a doctor.
